SPECIAL EVENTS AND PROGRAMS
National Trails Day
National Trails Day was created by the American Hiking Society in 1993 in an effort to further the goals of Trails For All Americans, a plan to establish a nationwide network of pathways that enable people to travel from their backyards to the backcountry -- and back again -- without leaving the trail. Occurring annually on the first Saturday in June, the program has grown to a nationwide extravaganza, attracting over one million outdoor enthusiasts to more than 3,000 events each year. The American Hiking Society serves as the organizer of the program, providing technical support to grassroots organizers across the country and staging a national media campaign that kicks off during National Trails Day and continues to educate people about hiking and trails throughout the summer season.Millenium Trails Program
The new national (United States) Millenium Trails Program that will recognize trails, sites along trails which interpret history, will preserve open space, and enhance recreation and tourism to provide an enduring legacy for all Americans as we begin the new millenium.AmeriCorps Program - Northwest Service Academy
"AmeriCorps Northwest Service Academy is now recruiting people to serve in the environment, schools, and communities. Positions available now! Benefits include a post-service scholarship to repay loans or to further schooling, a modest bi-weekly stipend, health care, child care (for those who qualify), and a true sense of accomplishment!" AMERICORPS and Northwest Service Academy workers have performed conservation and trail projects in the past, therefore, there may be an opportunity to be involved in future conservation and trail development work.Austrailian National Coastal Conference - March 6-9, 2000
